My project was inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe’s portraits
of people and flowers. They were mostly done in black and white, and were very
simple. I wanted to do my own version of his work where I would purposefully
pose people in the same positions as the flowers or make sure that there was
some element that connected them to their corresponding flower. I was drawn to
this idea because I already love taking photographs of flowers, and adding
people would give me a challenge. I have done a few portrait photo sessions for
friends, but have not had much experience. Also, we never got the chance to
focus on photographing people in this class. I chose my roommates and my best
friend from home to be my models because they are the most important people in
my life, and we are about to go our separate ways once we graduate. At
first, I was skeptical of my ability to pull off this concept. I did not want
it to look too staged or juvenile. In that respect, I am very excited about how
the project turned out. The photographs have a more cohesive feel than I had
anticipated, and I think that the people successfully pulled off posing as the
flowers. I wanted each of them to convey an emotion for the flowers as well,
which I also feel comes through in the final photographs.
